What is the symbolism within the book "Turnabout"?

For school, i have to do a sort of book report. I chose the book "Turnabout" by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Part of our summary that we have to write is to explain the symbolism within the book. I don't quite understand what they are asking for. What would you consider the symbolism is?
