Does Evangelical theology undermine the primary theme of the Sermon on the Mount?

From what I can tell, he communicated the message that it was possible and in all of our best interests to love unconditionally. We can know that he succeeded at getting that message across because at least some of us got the message that we can be more loving to ourselves and our fellow human beings all the time.
